Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Gallery

Morning came to Blackwood Manor without sunlight. Gray, mist-heavy clouds pressed against the towering floor-to-ceiling windows of the east wing. Elena had been moved to a suite larger than her entire previous apartment, decorated in muted golds and dark mahogany, with a private terrace overlooking the dense forest that formed the estate's perimeter.

On the bed lay a set of clothes: cashmere sweaters, tailored trousers, and soft leather flats—all in her exact size, their tags meticulously removed.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

The door creaked open, revealing Leo peeking through the crack. He held a worn, vintage leather-bound book with embossed gold lettering under his arm. Seeing her dressed and standing, his wide eyes brightened.

""Are you all fixed?"" he asked, stepping into the room cautiously.

Elena felt the hard knot in her chest soften. Despite the terror of the past twelve hours, this small boy was entirely innocent of his father’s violent empire. She knelt carefully, minding the tight stitches in her back.

""Good as new, Leo,"" she said, giving him a gentle smile. ""Your papa has very good doctors.""

Leo walked up to her, his little hand reaching out to touch the fabric over her shoulder. ""Papa said you were brave like a knight. He said you have iron in your bones.""

Elena let out a soft breath. ""I was just making sure you didn't get hurt. What do you have there?""

""Greek myths,"" Leo said proudly, holding up the book. ""Papa usually reads it to me before bed, but last night he was in the war room until the sun came up. Will you read about the labyrinth?""

Elena looked at the boy’s eager, hopeful face. She had spent years surviving on the razor edge of poverty, hardened by the world’s indifference, but Leo’s vulnerability disarmed her completely.

""I'd love to,"" Elena said.

They spent the morning on the velvet settee in the sunroom, Elena reading softly while Leo pointed at illustrations of minotaurs and golden threads. For an hour, the looming terror of the Vane syndicate faded into the background.

Until the heavy oak doors at the end of the gallery swung open.

Viktor entered, accompanied by three men in dark suits carrying black briefcases. His presence immediately altered the room’s atmosphere, heavy with authority and unspoken danger. He stopped at the entrance of the sunroom, his dark gaze taking in the picture of Elena with his son curled against her side.

For a split second, Elena caught something unexpected in his expression: an unshielded flicker of longing, so raw and desolate it vanished the moment Viktor blinked.

""Leo,"" Viktor’s deep voice carried across the room. ""Your tutor is waiting in the library.""

Leo sighed, looking up at Elena. ""Will you still be here when I finish?""

Elena hesitated, the heavy reality of her situation returning. She looked up at Viktor, whose cold eyes dared her to say no.

""I'll be around, Leo,"" Elena answered quietly.

Once the boy was led away by the guards, Viktor stepped forward, motioning the three suited men to place their briefcases on the polished mahogany table.

""The contract,"" Viktor said without preamble. ""Ten million dollars deposited into an offshore trust in your name. Full legal immunity. Your brother’s debt at the docks has already been wiped clean.""

Elena stood up, crossing her arms. ""You bought my brother’s debt?""

""I bought his freedom,"" Viktor corrected coldly. ""And I bought your exclusive loyalty. Sign the papers, Elena.""

Elena walked toward the table, looking at the dense legal document. ""And if I don't care about the money?""

Viktor stepped into her space, towering over her. ""The money is for your comfort. The signature is for your survival. Because five minutes ago, our scouts intercepted a radio transmission."" He leaned down, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. ""The Silvanos know you survived. And they have placed a bounty on your head.""
