Chapter 11 - The Serpent's Den

The Grand Ballroom of the Carlton was a palace of gilded excess. Crystal chandeliers cast brilliant amber light over five hundred guests dressed in black tie and couture silk. Diamond jewelry flashed under the chandeliers, while champagne flowed in endless fountains. Beneath the laughter and classical waltz, however, an undercurrent of lethal tension hummed like a live wire.
When Viktor Vane entered the double mahogany doors with Elena Vance on his arm, the room went entirely quiet.
Murmurs rippled through the crowd like wind across dry grass. Senators, cartel bosses, and foreign financiers watched in stunned silence as the reclusive head of the Vane syndicate walked the marble floor, not with armed bodyguards, but with the woman who had ruined the hit at Lumina.
Elena felt every eye drilling into her. She kept her spine straight, her chin lifted, drawing strength from the unyielding iron of Viktor’s arm beneath her fingers.
""Breathe, Elena,"" Viktor muttered beside her, his voice low and steady. ""They are looking at you because they are terrified. They know what I did to the men who breached my gates.""
Across the vast parquet floor, a man separated himself from a cluster of city officials.
Dante Silvano was slender, impeccably groomed, with silver-streaked hair and cold, calculating gray eyes. He held a flute of champagne, a thin, patronizing smile playing on his lips as he approached.
""Viktor,"" Dante greeted smoothly, stopping three paces away. ""I was beginning to think you were too cowardly to face polite company after your little... domestic disturbance.""
Viktor didn't flinch. ""I prefer business to parties, Dante. But I couldn't deny the invitation to look at a man who sends children to do his butchering.""
Dante’s smile tightened, his gray eyes sliding deliberately to Elena. The gaze was slimy, stripping, lingering on the black sapphire at her throat. ""And this must be the heroic little waitress. How charming. Viktor, you always did have a penchant for collecting stray pets.""
Elena felt the muscle in Viktor’s arm bunch like coiled steel. Before Viktor could speak, Elena stepped forward, her voice ringing clear and steady above the low chatter of the room.
""A stray pet who survived your poison, Mr. Silvano,"" she said, her hazel eyes locking onto his without a trace of fear. ""And from what I witnessed, your men shoot worse than they pour wine.""
A choked gasp rose from nearby onlookers. Dante’s smile vanished completely, replaced by an ugly, venomous sneer.
""A sharp tongue for someone whose life hangs by a thread,"" Dante hissed, stepping into her space.

Before Dante’s shoe crossed the seam in the parquet floor, Viktor moved. With blinding speed, Viktor caught Dante by the lapels of his thousand-dollar tuxedo, hauling him off his feet until the older man was forced onto his tiptoes.
""Touch her, Dante,"" Viktor whispered, his voice a lethal promise that echoed across the terrified silence of the ballroom. ""Breathe near her again, and the next thing your family buries will be your head in a box.""
