Chapter 13 - The New Routine

Life in the valley settled into a gentle, restorative rhythm.

Mornings began with the scent of pine and fresh eggs. Lily enrolled in the local elementary school, a welcoming brick building where the teachers knew every child by name. Mark took a flexible remote role with an engineering firm, allowing him to walk her to the bus stop every morning and greet her when she returned in the afternoon.

One afternoon, Lily brought home a permission slip for the school’s spring musical.

""I want to try out,"" she announced during dinner, setting the paper next to her plate.

Mark looked up from his soup. ""Really? What role are you aiming for?""

""A bird,"" she grinned, her eyes dancing with playful ambition. ""The lead canary. I have to sing a whole solo by myself.""

Mark remembered the terrified little girl who couldn't speak above a whisper in Room 302. He felt a lump rise in his throat, but he swallowed it down with a wide grin. ""Well, then we’d better start practicing. Your mom gave you the voice, so you definitely didn't get it from me.""

Every evening for the next three weeks, the living room turned into an auditorium. Mark sat on the couch with a wooden spoon as a pretend microphone, accompanying her with terrible acoustic guitar chords while Lily belted out her lines, laughing whenever Sunny howled along.

The shadows were losing their substance. In their place, a vibrant, resilient spirit was claiming its rightful territory.
