Chapter 15 - The Golden Horizon

Summer returned to the valley with warm breezes and skies of endless cerulean blue.
It was Sarah’s birthday. By mutual unspoken agreement, it was not a day of mourning, but a celebration of presence.
In the late afternoon, Mark and Lily walked to the top of the ridge behind their farmhouse. The meadow was thick with wildflowers—purple lupines, yellow daisies, and wild clover. Sunny sprinted ahead, chasing grasshoppers through the tall grass.
Lily carried a small wooden box Sarah had carved years ago. Inside were handwritten notes they had written throughout the year—little victories, funny moments, thoughts they wanted to share with the sky.
They sat side by side on a large flat stone overlooking the valley. The sun was beginning its slow descent, painting the clouds in brushstrokes of apricot, violet, and molten gold.
""Dad?"" Lily leaned her head against his shoulder.
""Yeah, bug?""
""Do you ever still feel sad?""
Mark wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close against the evening chill. ""Sometimes. Missing someone you love never completely goes away, Lily. But it changes. It stops feeling like a sharp cut, and starts feeling like a warm quilt you wrap around yourself when it’s cold.""
She nodded thoughtfully, watching the birds ride the thermal currents above the pines. ""I’m not scared anymore.""
""I know,"" Mark said, kissing her temple. ""You’re the bravest person I’ve ever met.""
""We’re brave together,"" she corrected gently.

Together, they opened the wooden box. One by one, they took the notes, read them softly into the breeze, and watched the wind carry the delicate parchment over the edge of the ridge, scattering them like autumn leaves across the golden expanse.
The sun dipped beneath the horizon, leaving behind a sky filled with twilight and stars. Hand in hand, father and daughter turned and walked down the path toward their home, where the lights were bright, the doors were unlocked, and love lived without fear."
