Chapter 8 - Echoes of Sarah

One Saturday morning, while clearing out the attic to permanently rid the house of Vanessa’s remaining belongings, Mark stumbled upon an old cedar chest tucked behind a stack of seasonal boxes. It belonged to Sarah.
Inside, beneath layers of vintage quilts, lay a treasure trove of forgotten memories: sketchbooks from her college days, handwritten recipes, and a portable cassette recorder with three labeled micro-tapes.
Mark brought the chest down to the living room. When Lily came downstairs, her eyes immediately locked onto the worn leather journals.
""Are those Mom's?""
""They are,"" Mark said softly. ""I think it’s time we looked at them together.""
They spent the entire afternoon sitting cross-legged on the rug, surrounded by Sarah’s handwriting. Lily ran her fingers over the whimsical doodles Sarah used to draw in the margins of her notebooks—little foxes, smiling suns, and cartoon birds.
Then, Mark placed one of the micro-tapes into an old player and pressed play.
A soft click, followed by static, and then—clear, bright, and unmistakably warm—Sarah’s voice filled the living room:
""Testing, testing... Okay, Lilybug, if you’re listening to this, you’re probably old enough to realize your mom talks way too much. Today you took your first three steps toward the refrigerator because you wanted a grape. Your dad cried. He denied it, but he definitely cried...""
Lily froze. Her hands hovered over the open notebook, her mouth slightly agape. Tears gathered in her eyes, but this time they were not born of terror or pain; they were tears of recognition, of an ancient warmth returning home.
""She sounds... happy,"" Lily whispered.

""She was extraordinarily happy,"" Mark said, his voice thick with emotion. ""And she loved you more than anything in this universe.""
For hours, they let the tapes run, allowing Sarah’s voice to wash through the rooms, cleansing the shadows, reclaiming the house for love.
