Chapter 14 - The Song of the Canary

Opening night arrived with a packed school auditorium.

The stage was decorated like an enchanted forest, filled with paper trees, cardboard mushrooms, and twinkling fairy lights. Mark sat in the third row, camera in his lap, his palms sweating more than they had during the trial.

When the music shifted to a gentle piano melody, the stage lights narrowed into a warm spotlight. Lily stepped forward, dressed in a bright yellow costume with delicate fabric feathers sewn along her sleeves.

She paused. For a second, her gaze scanned the dark audience, a flicker of old hesitation crossing her brow.

Mark sat up straight, caught her eye, and gave her a small, confident nod, tapping his chest twice—the universal signal they had developed over the past year. I’m right here.

Lily took a deep breath, lifted her chin, and sang.

Her voice was pure, clear, and utterly fearless. It soared into the rafters of the old auditorium, carrying none of the pain, none of the toxins, none of the terror of the past. It was the sound of a child who knew she was unconditionally loved, fiercely protected, and entirely free.

When the final note echoed and faded, the auditorium remained silent for a heartbeat before erupting into thunderous applause. Mark was on his feet instantly, clapping until his hands stung, tears streaming freely down his face.

On stage, Lily didn't look at the crowd. She looked directly at her father, her smile shining brighter than any stage light ever could.
