Chapter 2 - The Whispers of Greed

The precinct was a maze of dingy linoleum, stale coffee, and fluorescent flicker. Detective Vance Alvarez, a veteran investigator whose demeanor was forged in decades of urban decay, dropped a thick manila folder onto the interrogation table across from Mark.

""You need to see this,"" Alvarez said, sinking into the steel chair.

Mark hadn't slept in thirty-six hours. His eyes were bloodshot, his beard rough against the collar of his jacket. ""Tell me what she did.""

""Vanessa wasn't just your late wife’s former personal accountant, Mark. She was swimming in six figures of offshore debt before she even stepped into your home,"" Alvarez stated plainly. ""We pulled the pharmacy records. The prescription Lily gave you was obtained via an unverified telehealth provider under an alias Sarah used for discrete therapy sessions years ago.""

The puzzle snapped together with nauseating clarity. Sarah had built a modest software consultancy; upon her death, everything—the property, the intellectual rights, the trust funds meant strictly for Lily—had shifted into Mark's guardianship. But if Mark had collapsed under grief, or if Lily were deemed psychologically unfit, Vanessa had positioned herself as the secondary executor.

""She didn't just target Sarah,"" Mark breathed, horror coating his tongue. ""She was setting Lily up for the same narrative.""

""Classic pattern,"" Alvarez nodded grimly. ""She isolated the child, convinced you that Lily’s behavioral decline was inherited trauma, and steadily dosed her to create clinical confusion. If Lily appeared unstable, institutionalization becomes an easy legal argument down the line. Vanessa would control the trust indefinitely.""

Mark stood up, knocking his chair back with a scrape. The rage inside him threatened to swallow his rationality, but Alvarez placed a firm hand on his shoulder.

""The best revenge you can give that woman is letting the State Attorney tear her apart,"" Alvarez said calmly. ""Your real battle isn't here in an interrogation room, Mark. It’s back in Room 302. That little girl’s body is clearing toxins, but her mind is still locked in that dark laundry room.""

Mark looked down at his trembling hands. The anger faded, replaced by an overwhelming, humbling duty. Sarah was gone, and justice would grind forward through courts and verdicts, but Lily was alive. And she was starving for safety.
