Chapter 1 - The Mark of Truth

The crystal chandelier overhead hummed with faint electricity, casting sharp reflections across the sterling silver and vintage crystal. Julian Vance did not blink. His eyes remained locked on the delicate trembling of Clara’s wrists. The black fabric of her maid’s uniform cuff was frayed at the edges, pulled down too tight, hiding skin that should never have known violence.

Across the table, Victoria Sterling offered a manicured smile, her fingers swirling the vintage Cabernet in her glass. "Julian, darling, you’re making a scene over spilled soup. The girl is simply clumsy. Her hand got caught in the pantry door earlier."

"I told you," Julian said, his baritone dropping to a frequency that made the nearby guards stiffen, "I didn't ask you."

Slowly, Julian rose from the head of the banquet table. Towering, clad in a bespoke tuxedo with the inked serpent coiling up his neck beneath his collar, he closed the distance between himself and Clara. The porcelain bowls of steaming broth rattled against the silver tray in her hands.

"Put it down," he murmured gently.

Clara swallowed hard, her hazel eyes glistening with unshed tears. She set the tray onto the table with an agonizing slowness. Julian reached out, his calloused thumb sliding beneath the hem of her black wrist cuff. He peeled it back.

The dining room went dead silent.

It wasn't a scratch or a bruise from a door. Across Clara’s pale forearm were three distinct, blackened circular brands—cigar burns, pressed with deliberate, sadistic precision. Fresh ligature welts encircled her wrist like cruel bracelets.

Julian’s jaw clenched until the muscles feathered beneath his groomed beard. He turned his gaze toward Victoria, whose haughty smirk had suddenly withered into an ash-pale mask of guilt.

"You brought monsters into my house, Victoria," Julian whispered, the calm in his voice far more terrifying than a shout. "Tell me whose cigar made these marks, before I have you thrown from this balcony."

Before Victoria could speak, the glass double doors at the far end of the dining hall burst open, and Victoria’s father, Senator Sterling, stepped through with four armed security operatives behind him.

"You won't lay a finger on my daughter, Vance," the Senator snarled, gesturing toward the guards who immediately drew their sidearms, aiming directly at Clara’s chest.
