Chapter 15 - Ashes and the Dawn

The storm gradually broke as the helicopter crossed the coastline, flying out over the calm, dark waters of the Atlantic. Inside the warm cabin, Julian lay back against the leather seat, his breathing shallow. Clara knelt beside him, using emergency bandages to pack his wounds, her hands steady, her touch infinitely tender.

Julian looked up at her, watching the golden light of dawn break through the horizon, painting her delicate features in soft amber hues.

"You saved my life, Clara," he said, his voice raspy but clear. "Twice."

Clara looked at her own hands—the white gauze still wrapped around her wrist, covering the scars that had once symbolized her slavery and fear. But for the first time in seven years, her hands did not shake.

"You gave me a reason to stop running," she answered softly.

Julian reached up, his scarred fingers gently resting against her cheek. "Sterling’s empire is destroyed. The evidence Marcus broadcasted has already triggered federal raids across three states. Your brother is in custody. You are free."

Clara looked out the window at the endless expanse of the ocean. Freedom was something she had dreamed of for years, yet as she looked back down at the wounded king who had bled to protect her, she realized she had no desire to vanish into the shadows alone.

"What about you, Julian?" she asked, leaning closer until their foreheads almost touched. "What will you do now that your kingdom has to be rebuilt from ashes?"

"I don't care about the kingdom," Julian murmured, his dark eyes looking directly into her soul. "I only care about who sits beside me on the throne."

Clara’s lips parted, a fragile, beautiful smile finally gracing her face as Julian’s hand moved behind her neck, pulling her down into a deep, desperate kiss that tasted of rain, blood, and salvation.

Suddenly, the helicopter’s radar alert began to screech with a piercing, erratic alarm.

The pilot turned back, his face drained of color. "Mr. Vance... we have an incoming surface-to-air missile locked onto our signature. Originating from an unmarked warship directly below us."
