Chapter 9 - The Broadcast of Deception

Julian pulled out his encrypted smartphone, tapping into the live broadcast network. The screen lit up with the emblem of the Metropolitan News Network.

On screen, Senator Thomas Sterling stood not at a podium, but behind the bulletproof desk of Julian’s own executive boardroom at Vance Enterprises headquarters downtown.

"Citizens of the city," Sterling spoke solemnly into the bank of microphones. "Tonight, Julian Vance attempted a coup against our municipal stability. Federal authorities have uncovered ties between Vance and international criminal syndicates. In response to his violent treason, I have invoked emergency mayoral oversight. Vance Enterprises and all its subsidiary assets are now seized under federal sanction."

Julian’s jaw tightened. "He didn't just want to kill me. He stole my infrastructure."

"He used my family's old files to forge the connection," Clara whispered, horror dawning on her face. "The documents he stole from my father years ago... he fabricated a paper trail linking them to your company."

"Then we take it back," Julian said coldly. He turned to Marcus. "Arm the convoy. We are going to the downtown headquarters."

"Julian, you can't walk in there," Clara protested, clutching his forearm. "Every federal agent, police officer, and private mercenary in the state is guarding that tower. It's suicide."

Julian looked down at her, a dark, dangerous smile playing on his lips. "They think I built that tower with legal permits and steel, Clara. They don't know the secrets built beneath the foundation."

Forty minutes later, a fleet of three black armored SUVs rolled through the rain-slicked streets of the financial district, bypassing police barricades through the city's forgotten subterranean transit tunnels.

They emerged directly inside the maintenance sub-level beneath the Vance Tower. Julian, now clad in tactical gear over a fresh black shirt, loaded a custom rifle. He turned to Clara, who wore a heavy coat Julian had provided.

"Stay with the security squad here," Julian said. "Once I take the broadcast room, this will be over."

Clara shook her head firmly. "Sterling has a biometric safe in the master suite. The real ledger that clears your name and exposes his syndicate ties is locked inside. Only my fingerprint and retina can open it. If you go alone, you win a firefight, but you lose the war."

Julian looked into her determined eyes. There was no fear in her anymore; the fragile maid had vanished, replaced by the daughter of an empire.

"Stay behind me," Julian commanded, handing her a concealed sidearm. "Let's take our city back."
