Chapter 8 - The Viper’s Return

Through the haze of smoke stepped Victoria Sterling, holding a snub-nosed revolver, her pristine red gown now stained with dust at the hem. Beside her stood two heavily armed rogue guards in unmarked body armor.
"Bravo, Julian," Victoria purred, stepping onto the landing with chilling composure. "Always the martyr. Always playing the hero for broken things."
Julian stood up slowly, positioning himself between Victoria’s gun and Clara. Blood dripped steadily from the slash across his chest, staining his white dress shirt a deep crimson.
"You blew up my home, Victoria," Julian said, his voice quiet, devoid of fear. "You signed your family's death warrant."
"My family will run this city by dawn," Victoria laughed coldly. "The media is already reporting that a tragic gas explosion tore through your penthouse, killing both you and the Morozov fugitive. My father is giving a press briefing at City Hall as we speak, announcing emergency municipal control."
She raised the revolver, leveling the barrel straight at Julian’s forehead.
"It’s a shame," Victoria murmured, her finger tightening on the trigger. "You were handsome, Julian. But you never knew how to keep your hands off the help."
Clara watched Victoria’s finger squeeze the trigger. In a split second of pure instinct, Clara lunged forward, grabbing a heavy chunk of fallen concrete from the stair and hurling it with all her strength at Victoria’s arm.
The shot went wide, ricocheting loudly off the steel railing.
Julian moved with predatory speed. He closed the distance in a single stride, disarming Victoria with a brutal strike to her forearm. The gun clattered down the stairwell shaft, disappearing into the depths.
Before the two armed guards could raise their rifles, red lasers painted their visors. A deafening barrage of gunfire ripped through the stairwell from the floor below—Marcus and Julian’s strike team had arrived.
The guards dropped instantly. Victoria fell to her knees, screaming in terror as Julian’s men swarmed the landing, securing the perimeter with lethal efficiency.
Julian stared down at Victoria, his eyes cold as black ice. "Take her to the basement of the docks," he instructed Marcus. "Keep her alive until I deal with her father."
Marcus nodded and dragged Victoria away. Julian turned to Clara, who was leaning against the concrete wall, clutching her freshly bandaged arm. He walked over to her, his breathing heavy.
"Are you hurt?" he asked softly.
Clara looked up at him, her eyes searching his. "Why did you save me? I brought destruction to your door. I'm the daughter of your former enemy."
May you like
Julian reached out, his hand gently cupping the side of her face, wiping away a smear of black soot with his thumb. "Because you didn't run when the glass broke. You threw yourself into the fire for me."
Before Clara could answer, Julian’s radio crackled to life with Marcus’s urgent voice: "Boss! Turn on the news feed right now. Senator Sterling... he’s not at City Hall."
