Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

Clara pulled her arm back as if burned, clutching it against her chest. Her breath hitched. The air between them instantly shifted from tentative compassion to razor-sharp suspicion.
"I didn't choose it," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I was born into it."
Julian stood up slowly, looking down at her. His mind pieced together the puzzle at lightning speed. Seven years ago, the Morozov family had been slaughtered in a coordinated coup that cleared the path for Julian’s rise to power. He had believed every bloodline heir had been eliminated by the rival Bratva faction.
"You're Clara Morozova," Julian said, the name sounding heavy and dangerous on his tongue. "The youngest daughter. You disappeared the night the estate burned."
"My mother hid me in the cellar," Clara confessed, her voice trembling but steadying with defiance. "I spent seven years running, taking odd jobs under fake names, scrubbing floors and hiding in plain sight. Then Senator Sterling found me. He threatened to hand me over to the Bratva hitmen unless I infiltrated your staff."
Julian rubbed his jaw, processing the betrayal. "Sterling didn't just want to frame me. He wanted to use Morozov blood to spark a war between my syndicate and the northern clans."
Suddenly, the lights throughout the penthouse flickered violently. The low hum of the ventilation system ground to a halt, plunging the luxurious room into deep, terrifying darkness, illuminated only by the neon glow of the city skyline through the panoramic windows.
A loud thud echoed from the private balcony outside the study.

Julian drew a custom matte-black pistol from beneath his jacket, his senses instantly on high alert. "Stay behind the desk. Don't make a sound."
Through the floor-to-ceiling glass, three silhouettes in tactical gear rappelled down from the roof, their laser sights cutting through the dark room like crimson daggers.
