Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The dining room fell into a suffocating silence, heavy as lead. Nikolai’s heavy, tattooed hand stayed fixed upon the polished mahogany, his knuckles whitening beneath ink-darkened skin. His cold obsidian eyes pinned Vanessa against her high-backed chair, stripping away every shred of her glamorous composure. Beside him, three-year-old Sofia clung tightly to his sleeve, her tiny fingers trembling as she pointed toward the woman in the shimmering champagne dress. The maid, Elena, stood frozen behind them, her chest heaving in rapid, terrified breaths.

Vanessa’s lips parted, trembling beneath a coat of crimson gloss. A delicate bead of sweat traced down her sculpted cheekbone, catching the warm amber gleam of the chandelier. ""Nikolai, please... it’s absurd,"" she whispered, her voice fluttering like a trapped bird. ""She is a child. She doesn’t understand what she’s looking at. Why would I ever hurt you?""

Nikolai did not blink. He slowly drew his gaze down to the crystal goblet resting before him. The deep red liquid caught the dim light, throwing blood-red reflections onto his lapels. He lifted one hand and gently stroked Sofia’s soft, dark curls. The monstrous edge of his presence softened only for a heartbeat as he whispered to the girl, ""Did you see it, little bird?""

Sofia nodded emphatically, burying her face into his tailored jacket. ""Bad lady put white sugar in Daddy’s cup. From her shiny ring.""

The mention of the ring hit Vanessa like a physical blow. Instinctively, her left hand jerked downward beneath the rim of the table, attempting to conceal the large, antique emerald band on her index finger.

Nikolai caught the movement. His expression remained utterly devoid of warmth or hesitation, an impassive mask of lethality honed through years of bloodshed. With slow, deliberate precision, he reached out and took the crystal stem between two fingers. He did not drink. Instead, he reached across the table, grabbed Vanessa’s wrist in a vise grip that wrenched a sharp gasp from her lungs, and forced her hidden hand onto the table.

""White sugar,"" Nikolai repeated, his voice barely louder than a ghost's breath, yet reverberating off the marble walls like thunder. ""Elena. Bring the house physician. Lock every exit.""

Vanessa looked into the eyes of the man she had courted for months, finding nothing there but an endless abyss. Tears welled in her eyes, but not from sorrow—pure, untainted dread consumed her.

""Drink it,"" Nikolai commanded softly, placing the rim of the goblet against her trembling lips. ""Show me Sofia was mistaken.""

Vanessa kept her jaw locked, shaking her head violently as a tear spilled over. Nikolai watched her refusal, his grip tightening until her bones creaked.

Before she could speak another lie, the grand double doors of the dining hall slammed open, and his chief enforcer staggered inside, bleeding heavily from a freshly opened wound in his neck.
