Chapter 2 - Blood on Marble

The enforcer, Viktor, collapsed to his knees just inside the doorway, his hand clutching his throat as arterial crimson leaked between his thick fingers. The scent of coppery violence instantly overpowered the rich aroma of seared steak and aged wine. Nikolai reacted without a wasted second. In one fluid, practiced motion, he swept Sofia into his left arm, shielding her face against his broad shoulder, while his right hand smoothly drew the concealed automatic pistol from under his suit coat.
""Elena, take the child to the vault,"" Nikolai snapped, his voice a low, lethal rasp that cut through the sudden panic.
The young maid sprang forward despite shaking legs, gently wrapping her arms around the trembling girl. Sofia let out a muffled whimper, her little fingers dragging along her father’s tailored lapel before she was pulled away into the shadows of the servant passage behind the banquet hall.
Nikolai turned his cold, calculating gaze back toward the doorway, entirely unbothered by the chaos unfolding before him. ""Who breached the perimeter, Viktor?""
""Not... not from outside, Boss,"" Viktor choked out, blood spilling over his lips. His heavy breath sputtered as his back scraped against the gilded doorframe. ""The inner guard... Dante turned.""
A hollow, mocking laugh echoed from the seat opposite him. Nikolai’s eyes snapped toward Vanessa. The terrified, cornered woman had vanished; in her place was a smirk dripping with venom. The champagne dress seemed brighter, reflecting the grim reality that she had never been alone in her scheme.
""You're a brilliant monster, Nikolai,"" Vanessa whispered, slipping the emerald ring off her finger and letting it clatter onto the china plate. ""You check every shadow for enemies, but you never look at the men who carry your own coat.""
Footsteps approached from the gallery hall, heavy, rhythmic, and unmistakable. Dante, Nikolai’s second-in-command and trusted brother-in-arms for over a decade, stepped into the dining hall holding a silenced tactical rifle. Behind him, three heavily armored men moved into tactical positions, clearing corners with surgical efficiency.
Nikolai didn’t flinch. He remained seated at the head of the table, his posture regal, his pistol resting flat on the mahogany beside his wine glass.
""Ten years, Dante,"" Nikolai remarked, his voice devoid of anger, colder than ice. ""You knelt at my wedding. You held my daughter when she was an infant.""
""And you grew soft, old friend,"" Dante said calmly, aiming the rifle directly at Nikolai's chest. ""A king who hesitates because of a child isn't fit to rule the syndicate. Stand up, Nikolai. Let's finish this where your father started it.""

Nikolai merely arched an eyebrow, his fingers gently tapping the base of the poisoned wine glass. ""You think I came to this table unprepared?""
With a deafening crash, the panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows behind Dante imploded inward into a million razor shards.
