Chapter 11 - The Ultimate Price

Time ground to a halt. In the dim, flickering shadows of the bridge, Nikolai saw Vanessa’s blood-spattered face contort into a mask of pure, unadulterated malice. Her finger was already tightening on the trigger of the small revolver, aiming point-blank at the center of Sofia’s tiny spine. There was no time to draw a weapon, no time to throw a knife, no time to reason.

There was only instinct.

Nikolai twisted his body, throwing his massive frame over Sofia, wrapping his arms around her like an impenetrable shield of flesh and bone.

A deafening crack tore through the enclosed bridge.

The bullet struck Nikolai beneath his left shoulder blade. A searing, white-hot agony flared through his chest, knocking the breath from his lungs with the force of an iron hammer. He grunted, his teeth grinding together so hard enamel chipped, but he did not fall. He kept his weight braced on his knees, his broad back absorbing the impact completely, keeping the little girl pinned safely beneath his chest.

""Daddy!"" Sofia shrieked, feeling the violent shudder that tore through his body.

Vanessa pulled the hammer back again, her wild eyes glowing with triumphant hysteria. ""Both of you! Die together!""

Before she could squeeze the trigger a second time, a single suppressed gunshot hissed through the shattered glass of the bridge’s aft window.

Vanessa’s head snapped back. A clean, circular puncture appeared in the center of her forehead. The light vanished from her eyes instantly, replaced by a vacant, hollow stare. The revolver tumbled from her limp fingers, clattering onto the deck as her body collapsed backward, motionless among the scattered charts.

Through the broken window stepped Nikolai’s head of security, Mikhail, his sniper rifle still smoking in his gloved hands. Behind him, three more loyal shadow operatives poured onto the bridge, weapons sweeping the perimeter.

""Boss!"" Mikhail rushed forward, slinging his rifle over his shoulder and dropping to his knees beside Nikolai. ""Medic! Get the kit up here now!""

Nikolai held up a trembling, blood-stained hand, stopping the operative in his tracks. ""Sofia..."" he gasped, his voice thick with blood rising in his throat. ""Check... the child.""

Mikhail gently lifted Sofia from beneath Nikolai’s heavy frame. The girl was crying hysterically, her dress smeared with her father’s dark blood, but completely unscathed. ""She’s whole, Sir. Not a scratch on her.""

Nikolai slumped against the iron console, his vision swimming with dark spots. The burning in his chest was spreading, cold numbness creeping down his left arm. He looked at his little girl, forcing his cracked, bloodied lips into a faint, reassuring smile.

""You did good, little bird,"" Nikolai whispered, his breath shallow and wheezing. ""You saved... Daddy.""

Sofia reached out, her small, warm fingers touching his cold, stubbled cheek. ""Don't sleep, Daddy. Please don't sleep.""

Nikolai’s heavy eyelids fluttered. The edges of the world began to blur into an inescapable gray fog. As the sirens of the syndicate's private armored ambulances wailed in the distance, a dark figure stepped silently through the bridge doorway behind the medics—a face Nikolai thought was buried six feet under years ago.
