Chapter 4 - The Iron Door

The subterranean corridors beneath the estate were cold and damp, a stark contrast to the opulence above. Nikolai ran with relentless speed, his leather-soled shoes striking the flagstones with heavy, hollow thuds. Every shadow seemed to stretch mockingly toward him, the distant echoes of gunfire overhead fading into a tense, sepulchral silence.
He turned a sharp corner into the armory corridor and skidded to a halt.
The heavy steel bulkhead leading to the private vault stood half ajar, its electronic lock panel sparking violently, completely fried by an explosive breach charge. A deep, cold dread pooled in his stomach. He raised his weapon and sliced through the threshold, sweeping the room in a single breath.
The vault was ransacked. Steel safety deposit boxes hung open like dead jaws, their secret ledgers and stacks of bearer bonds scattered across the floor. In the far corner, Elena lay motionless against a row of filing cabinets, a trail of dark blood matting her hair near her temple.
Nikolai crossed the room in two strides, dropping to one knee beside the girl. He pressed two tattooed fingers against her neck. A faint, rapid pulse fluttered against his skin. She was alive, only concussed.
He gripped her shoulder and shook her firmly. ""Elena. Wake up.""
Elena gasped, her eyes fluttering open, wide with delirium and panic. She flinched violently before recognizing Nikolai’s fierce face above her. ""Mr... Mr. Nikolai..."" she sobbed, clutching his forearm with bruised fingers. ""They took her... Dante... he had a keycard...""
""Where did they take my daughter?"" Nikolai whispered, the words vibrating with a rage so pure it chilled the air between them.
Elena struggled to sit upright, wincing in agony. ""He said... the docks. He said if you want her breathing, you have to bring the ledger of the Council yourself... alone.""
Nikolai stood slowly, every muscle coiled like a struck iron spring. Dante had planned this meticulously. The poisoned wine had merely been the easiest route; Dante had fully prepared for its failure. Taking Sofia was not just leverage—it was meant to break the king of the underworld until he handed over the very foundation of his empire.
Nikolai walked back to the fried electronic panel, plucking a small, dropped object from the cold floor. It was a single, light-blue hair ribbon, torn and dusted with soot.
He closed his hand over the delicate silk, his knuckles turning dead white. He slipped the ribbon into his breast pocket, resting it right against his racing heart.
His shadow operative stepped into the doorway, breathing heavily. ""Sir, we have two transport helicopters fueled at the helipad. Should we mobilize the entire district?""
""No,"" Nikolai said softly, his voice devoid of all humanity. ""Cancel the choppers. Call no one.""

The operative blinked in shock. ""Sir? You're going into the docks alone?""
Nikolai turned his head, his dark eyes burning with an unholy fire. ""When a wolf hunts the pack, he uses strength. When he hunts the rats in the dark, he uses silence.""
