Chapter 14 - Ash and Salt

The magnesium flare burned through the ship’s wiring harness beneath the steering console, igniting pools of hydraulic fluid and diesel that had pooled in the bilges over decades of neglect. Thick, black, oily smoke billowed across the bridge, turning the enclosed space into an unbreathable inferno.

Nikolai moved through the fire like a vengeful demon. The heavy fire ax swung in a wide, lethal arc, catching the first sniper who breached the bridge door squarely in the chest, sending him crashing backward over the railing into the churning waters below.

Dominic retreated down the exterior companionway, his cane striking the metal steps in frantic haste, surrounded by four armored bodyguards who fired continuous suppression bursts back toward the burning wheelhouse.

""Don't let him reach the engine room!"" Dominic screamed over the roar of the flames. ""The girl must not leave this harbor!""

Nikolai emerged from the wall of fire, his sweater smoldering, his face blackened by soot, blood running in thick rivers down his back and arm. He didn't feel the pain anymore. Shock and rage had turned his body into a numb instrument of slaughter. He snatched a discarded assault rifle from the deck, braced it against his uninjured hip, and opened fire down the stairwell.

Two of Dominic's guards collapsed in tangled heaps of gore, tumbling down the iron stairs.

Dominic looked back, genuine horror finally breaking through his arrogant facade. He was looking at a dead man walking, a father whose devotion had obliterated every instinct of human survival. ""You're a madman!"" the old man shouted, limping desperately toward a high-speed black launch boat tied to the offshore side of the freighter.

""I am the monster you created!"" Nikolai’s voice bellowed through the smoke, a sound that shook the very iron framing of the ship.

Nikolai charged down the steps, discarding the empty rifle. He closed the distance before Dominic could reach the launch boat. With a brutal sweep of his arm, Nikolai knocked the silver cane away, sending it clattering into the ocean, and pinned the old consiglieri against the gunwale of the ship.

His hand closed around Dominic’s throat, squeezing with the remaining power in his shattered body.

""Look at me, old man,"" Nikolai snarled, his face inches from Dominic's terrified, single eye. ""My daughter will never know your name. She will never know this world.""

""You... you can't save her from her blood..."" Dominic choked out, his hands clawing weakly at Nikolai’s iron grip. ""It's in her... the darkness...""

Nikolai glanced toward the harbor edge. Through the smoke, he saw Mikhail carrying Sofia safely off the far end of the pier, vanishing into the waiting convoy of syndicate armored vehicles that had finally broken through the blockade. She was safe. She was free.

Nikolai looked back at Dominic, his expression settling into an icy, eternal peace. ""The darkness dies tonight. With us.""

Nikolai stepped backward, dragging Dominic with him over the low iron rail, plummeting into the icy, churning black waters of the bay just as the freighter's fuel tanks ignited in a cataclysmic, sky-shattering fireball.
