Chapter 13 - The Purge of the Estate

Above ground, the Vance estate was tearing itself apart. The magnificent neoclassical mansion, with its grand chandeliers, manicured gardens, and gilded mirrors, was built directly atop the containment seals of the Covenant. As the pillar of sapphire light erupted through the center of the dining hall, the floorboards split open, swallowing the breakfast table where Alina had left her ring hours before.

The diamond ring fell into the abyss, consumed by the pure elemental energy surging from below.

Down in the vault, Evelyn Vance pulled herself up against the broken stone, her body convulsing as the stolen Crimson power was systematically drained from her cells. Without the Foundation's ancient energy to sustain her unnatural longevity, the years caught up to her in seconds. Her silver hair fell out in clumps; her skin turned translucent and paper-thin, collapsing against the hollows of her skull.

"My legacy..." Evelyn wheezed, clawing at the stone floor with broken nails. "Two hundred years... we ruled this valley..."

Diane stepped forward from the shadows of the corridor. Her dislocated shoulder hung limp, but her eyes were steady as she looked down at her dying sister. "You didn't rule, Evelyn. You were parasites living in the walls of a house you didn't build. And the landlord is finally home."

Diane knelt down and picked up the silver hunting knife from the floor, setting it gently beside Evelyn’s trembling hands. "Die with some dignity, sister. It’s the only luxury you have left."

Inside the sanctum, the radiant storm began to settle into a steady, rhythmic pulse. Alina stood on the platform, her dress torn, her skin glowing with a faint, luminous aura that was now permanently integrated into her being. The blue script on her arms had settled into elegant, geometric bands that looked like jewelry crafted from starlight.

Julian lay at the base of the platform, breathing heavily. The red light had completely vanished from his eyes. His body looked diminished, his unnatural, towering strength stripped away, leaving only an exhausted, broken man in ruined clothes.

Alina stepped down from the platform, her bare feet making soft, deliberate sounds against the marble. She stopped two paces away from him and looked down.

Julian slowly lifted his head, unable to look directly into her luminous eyes. "Is it... is it over?"

"The Vance dynasty is over," Alina said, her voice devoid of malice, carrying only the finality of an architect inspecting a completed demolition. "Your family's hold on this valley, on the police, on the people—it's broken. The seals are reset."

Julian closed his eyes, a single tear cutting through the dust on his cheek. "What are you going to do with me?"

May you like

Alina didn't answer immediately. She walked past him toward the shattered entrance of the vault, where Diane was waiting. The sunlight was beginning to filter down through the cavernous rift in the ceiling, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.

"You get to live, Julian," Alina said without looking back. "You get to live as an ordinary man, without your wealth, without your power, and with the full memory of every choice you made to become what you were. That is your sentence."
