Chapter 7 - Under the Stone

The drop was twenty feet into an icy, rushing subterranean stream that knocked the breath completely out of Alina's lungs. The water was waist-deep, churning over slick limestone before leveling off into a subterranean canal clearly carved by human hands centuries ago. High vaulted arches of black stone stretched into the darkness above, completely untouched by modern civilization.
Alina surfaced, sputtering and shivering violently, her dress clinging to her like a shroud. Diane was already on her feet, standing on a dry elevated pathway that ran alongside the canal, holding a small chemical flare that cast an eerie green light across the ancient stonework.
"Up here," Diane commanded, extending a hand to haul Alina out of the freezing current.
Alina collapsed onto the stone ledge, her teeth chattering so hard she could barely speak. "Where... where are we?"
"The Foundation," Diane said, leading the way along the narrow path. "Before the Vances built their modern mansion on the peak, this mountain was a containment fortress designed by the Iron Covenant. These aqueducts were built to channel the subterranean currents—moving water disrupts the Crimson tracking senses. Julian’s hounds won't be able to smell your blood down here."
As they walked, Alina looked at the walls. Every few yards, elaborate geometric patterns were chiseled into the rock, interlocking circles and sharp angles that formed complex mechanical locks. She felt an eerie, electric pull toward them. Without meaning to, her fingers brushed against a recessed dial in the stone wall.
A faint click echoed through the tunnel. A ring of soft, amber light illuminated along the perimeter of the archway ahead, pushing back the damp shadows.
Diane stopped dead in her tracks, staring at the lit archway, then at Alina. "You just bypassed a three-hundred-year-old deadman switch without even looking at the cipher."
"I didn't think about it," Alina admitted, staring at her own wet fingers. "It felt like... like finding a light switch in my own bedroom in the middle of the night. It felt familiar."
"It's genetic memory," Diane said quietly, her demeanor shifting from guarded hostility to something resembling reverence. "Your bloodline didn't just build this place. You designed the security keys. Which means the primary vault below the estate is accessible to you."
"I don't care about a vault," Alina said, her voice trembling with exhaustion and mounting anger. "I want to get back to the city. I want to go to the police. I want my life back."
"The city police belong to Evelyn Vance's payroll, Alina," Diane said coldly, turning to face her. "And there is no going back to your old life. Once the Crimson mark is exposed, they will hunt you until you are either collared or dead. The only way you survive this is by finishing what your ancestors started."
"And what is that?"
May you like
"Reclaiming the Heart of the Foundation," Diane said, pointing down the long, dark corridor. "The artifact that Evelyn Vance stole sixty years ago to give her family their monstrous strength. We take it back, and Julian Vance loses his power forever."
A distant rumble shook the ceiling, sending showers of dust into the emerald light of the flare. Above them, deep within the mountain, the rhythmic thud of structural demolition echoed. Julian had brought heavy drilling equipment into the logging trails.
