Chapter 6 - The Iron Gate Breaks

The searchlights pinned Alina and Diane in an unforgiving glare, turning the ancient stone church into an executioner's stage. Down the forested ridge, the roar of modified engines echoed, accompanied by the synchronized thud of heavy combat boots crushing underbrush. The Vance Vanguard had arrived—a private, militarized unit bred and trained on the estate grounds, completely bound to the family's will by arcane oaths.

Julian walked out of the treeline first, flanked by four towering operators in tactical armor bearing the Vance crest: a coiled serpent clutching an empty chalice. His cream turtleneck was smeared with grease, his navy blazer abandoned. His red eyes were no longer merely glowing; they cast a bloody sheen across the forest floor, casting grotesque, elongated shadows behind him.

"Aunt Diane," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, carrying effortlessly across the clearing. "Mother told me you drowned in the gorge twenty years ago. It seems her mercy was wasted."

"Your mother doesn't have a merciful bone in her desiccated body, Julian," Diane countered, holding the silver knife casually at her side. "And neither do you. Running down a defenseless woman with your personal death squad? Even for the Crimson house, that’s pathetic."

"She isn't defenseless," Julian replied, his eyes fixing entirely on Alina. His expression softened for a fraction of a second, an echo of the man who had bought her coffee and laughed at her jokes in the city, before the crimson darkness consumed it once more. "She holds a key she doesn't understand. Alina, come back. We can fix this. The wedding proceeds as planned. You take the oath, and the ward on your arm will be bound safely."

"I am never stepping foot in that mausoleum again," Alina said, stepping forward until she stood level with Diane. "And I will never belong to you."

Julian’s jaw tightened, the muscles twitching beneath his skin. "You don't understand the geography of this valley. Everything here belongs to my mother. Every stone, every tree, every soul. Vanguard, secure the girl. Kill the exile."

The four operators moved with impossible velocity, surging forward with tactical blades drawn. But Diane didn't run. She drove her silver knife directly into the earth at the foot of the obsidian pillar.

"Alina, touch the stone!" Diane shouted. "Feed it the pulse!"

Without thinking, driven entirely by instinct, Alina slammed her right palm against the cold obsidian. The blue sigil beneath her skin flared violently, sending a blinding shockwave of cerulean lightning tearing through the ancient bedrock.

The earth cracked open. Massive slabs of ancient masonry burst upward from the forest floor, forming a jagged, impenetrable wall of stone between them and the advancing soldiers. Gunfire erupted, but the bullets flattened harmlessly against the summoned barrier.

"Run through the rift!" Diane yelled, grabbing Alina’s arm and pulling her toward a deep, shadowy fissure that had opened beneath the ruined altar. "The mountain tunnels lead to the old riverbed!"

They jumped into the dark just as a deafening explosion shattered the stone wall above them. As Alina fell into the subterranean cold, she heard Julian’s enraged roar echoing through the cavern—a sound that was no longer remotely human.
