Chapter 1 - The Shattered Mask

The monochrome glare of the smartphone screen cast a ghostly pallor across Mark’s face. In his arms, little Maya let out a soft, hitching whimper, burying her tear-stained cheek against the coarse fabric of his navy dress shirt. The nursery was suffocatingly quiet, broken only by Elena’s shuddering gasps from the carpet. On the tiny display, the grainy timestamp marked 13:38. The digital playback showed Maya sitting peacefully on the plush rug, clutching her stuffed bunny. Then, a slender silhouette stepped into the frame. Claire.
Mark watched in petrified horror. The footage did not show an accident. It showed Claire bending down, her manicured hand gripping the back of the toddler’s collar, and deliberately tipping the child sideways onto the floorboards with calculated malice, just as Elena entered the hallway.
"Claire..." Mark's voice was barely an exhale, scraping out from the bottom of his chest. His gaze lifted from the screen to his wife.
Claire stood frozen, her defensive sneer disintegrating into stark terror. The smug certainty that had defined her expression seconds ago vanished, replaced by an unsettling, hollow blankness. Her manicured fingers twitched against her beige blouse.
"Mark, please," she stammered, taking a jerky half-step backward toward the nursery door. "You don't understand the context. You don't know what she drove me to."
"What she drove you to?" Mark echoed, his tone dangerously low. "She wasn't even in the room yet! You pushed our daughter! You tried to frame Elena!"
Elena remained on her knees, her trembling hands folded over her chest. "Mr. Mark, I swear... I tried to tell you last week. The bruises on her shoulders wasn't rough play."
Mark’s blood ran ice-cold. He remembered the faint purple marks he had dismissed after Claire claimed Maya had bumped against the crib slats. Every instinct he possessed as a protector screamed in belated agony. He tightened his grip on his daughter, stepping squarely between Claire and the child.
"Get out," Mark said, his voice level, vibrating with repressed fury. "Get out of this room before I call the police."
Claire’s eyes darted frantically between the phone in his hand and the hallway behind her. For a split second, an eerie calm washed over her panic. She didn't cry. She didn't apologize. Instead, a chilling, bitter smile touched the corners of her lips.

"You think this is over because of a little video, Mark?" she whispered, her voice dropping to a sinister cadence. "You have no idea what is actually inside this house."
Before Mark could react, Claire whipped around, bolted down the hallway, and slammed the master bedroom door. Moments later, a sharp, metallic click echoed through the floorboards—the sound of a deadbolt turning from the inside.
