Chapter 6 - The Boathouse Bargain

The rain began to fall as Mark drove his truck through the wrought-iron gates of the family’s lakeside estate. The massive Victorian manor loomed dark on the hill, but at the edge of the black water, the lights of the private boathouse cut through the mist.

Mark turned off his headlights and sat in the idling truck for a moment. He checked his phone. Elena had sent a photo of Maya sleeping safely in the guest room of his most trusted friend's house. Knowing his daughter was safe gave Mark an anchor of resolve.

He stepped out into the biting drizzle, his coat collar pulled up against the damp chill. Inside his coat pocket rested the black ledger.

The boathouse smelled of damp pine, motor oil, and lake water. In the center of the polished concrete floor, seated beneath a hanging halogen bulb, was Arthur Sterling. At seventy-two, the patriarch still possessed the imposing posture of an apex predator. Behind him stood two burly men in dark suits—private security who had served the family for decades.

"You look terrible, Mark," Arthur said smoothly, resting both hands on his silver-tipped cane. "You always let your emotions run your life. Just like your mother."

"Cut the garbage, Dad," Mark snarled, walking into the circle of light. "You paid Claire to keep quiet about a child. You forced her into a sham marriage with me. Why?"

Arthur chuckled, a dry, rattling sound. "Forced her? Claire came to me, Mark. Six years ago, when she realized she was pregnant after your summer in Boston, she didn't want the child. She wanted five million dollars. She wanted access to the Sterling name."

Mark froze. "She sold him to you?"

"She wanted an abortion or an auction. I couldn't let a Sterling heir be scrubbed out or raised by strangers in the tabloids," Arthur said, his eyes hardening. "So I made a deal. She would carry the child to term, place him in discreet foster care under my supervision, and marry you to preserve our family's public stability. She received fifty thousand a month to play the doting wife."

"And Maya?" Mark whispered, horror suffocating his lungs. "Why did you let her have Maya?"

"Claire got greedy," Arthur said coldly. "She thought having a biological child within the marriage would secure the entire estate permanently. But when she realized you loved Maya more than her, she began to lose her mind."

"Where is the boy, Dad?" Mark stepped forward, his fists clenching. "Tell me where my son is!"

Arthur smiled thinly, tapping his cane on the concrete. "He was in a safe house upstate. Until two hours ago. Claire took him, Mark. And she’s heading for the Canadian border."
