Chapter 4 - The Ledger's Ghost

The ledger lay splayed open on the damp stone pavers below, its pages fluttering in the wind. Mark didn't chase the screeching tires of Claire’s sedan. His limbs felt heavy, weighted down by a sickening premonition. He hurried down the exterior stairs and scooped the book from the concrete.
The pages were dense with handwritten financial logs, bank routing numbers, and scanned copies of legal agreements dated five years prior—just three months before he and Claire had announced their sudden engagement.
Mark turned the pages under the glare of the patio floodlights. His eyes scanned the names: his father’s holding company, Vanguard Capital, and an offshore shell company registered under Claire’s maiden name. But it was the nature of the transactions that made his stomach heave. Monthly payments of fifty thousand dollars, categorized under "Non-Disclosure & Custodial Settlement."
"Settlement for what?" Mark muttered aloud, his fingers trembling against the paper.
He flipped toward the back pocket of the leather binder. Tucked inside was a folded hospital document stamped with a confidential seal from St. Jude’s Memorial. It was a birth certificate, but not Maya’s.
The document listed a baby boy born six years ago. The mother was Claire. The father's name was left blank. But pinned to the certificate was a handwritten note in his father's unmistakable, rigid script: Ensure the boy remains untraceable. If Mark ever discovers what happened in Boston, the entire inheritance dissolves.
Mark’s breath caught in his throat. He had lived in Boston six years ago, managing the family firm’s regional branch. He had met Claire at a charity gala there. Or at least, that was the story he had believed for half a decade.
From inside the house, the sound of Maya crying cut through his spiraling thoughts. Mark tucked the ledger into his coat and rushed back inside to the kitchen.
Elena was holding the child, rocking her near the counter. When she saw Mark's pale, haunted face, her eyes widened.
"Mr. Mark? Did she get away?"
May you like
"She's gone," Mark said, his voice hollow. "Elena, did Claire ever mention Boston? Did she ever talk about a boy?"
Elena’s face drained of color, her gaze dropping instantly to the floor. "She said... she said if I ever told you about the boy who visited the garden last month, she would destroy us all."
