Chapter 14 - The Final Intruder

A cold dread seized Mark’s spine. Maya and Elena were supposed to be safe at his friend David's house. But what if Elena had returned to fetch Maya's clothes and medication? Or worse—what if Julian hadn't been working alone?

Mark urgently instructed the state troopers to assign a protective detail to the ambulance escorting Leo to the hospital. "My son needs round-the-clock guards. Do not let anyone near his room without my clearance."

"Understood, Mr. Sterling. We'll secure the perimeter," the officer confirmed.

Mark sprinted back to his truck. The engine roared to life, and he sped south toward the suburban neighborhood he had left hours ago. The drive was a blur of panic and racing thoughts. If anything happened to Maya, all the truth in the world wouldn't matter.

By the time he turned onto his street, dawn was breaking, casting a dull gray light over the pristine lawns. The front door of his home was slightly ajar, the lock scratched with forced entry marks.

Mark drew a heavy tire iron from the truck bed and moved silently up the front steps. The house was deathly quiet.

He pushed the door open, his boots stepping over scattered mail and broken glass in the foyer. The staircase loomed ahead. Faint, rhythmic thumping sounds drifted from the upper floor—specifically from Maya’s nursery.

Gripping the iron bar, Mark ascended the stairs, taking each step with agonizing care.

The nursery door was wide open. Inside, standing near the white crib, was a woman dressed in a rain poncho, her back turned to him. She was frantically searching through the baby’s dresser, tossing clothes and toys onto the carpet.

"Don't move," Mark said, his voice lethal as he raised the tire iron. "Turn around slowly."

The woman froze. She raised her hands and turned around.

It was not a hired mercenary. It was Elena’s younger sister, Sofia—the woman Claire had supposedly threatened to deport. But Sofia wasn't looking at Mark with fear; she was clutching a small wooden jewelry box that Mark recognized as Claire's private safe.

"Mr. Mark... please," Sofia whispered, trembling. "You don't understand. Elena... Elena lied to you."
