Chapter 13 - Reckoning in the Cold

Three state trooper cruisers and an ambulance arrived in a blinding storm of flashing red and blue lights. Paramedics rushed down the embankment with a stretcher, while officers drew their weapons, securing Julian as he staggered onto the shoulder in handcuffs.

Mark refused to let go of the boy until they were inside the warm, sterile interior of the ambulance. A paramedic gently wrapped Leo in thermal blankets, checking his vitals while another treated the cut on Mark’s jaw.

"He has a mild concussion and hypothermia, but he’s remarkably stable," the paramedic reported, smiling reassuringly. "You saved his life, sir."

Mark sat on the bench, holding the boy’s small, warm hand. Leo’s eyelids fluttered open slowly. Big, hazel eyes—identical to Maya’s—looked up at Mark with cautious wonder.

"Who are you?" the boy asked, his voice tiny and hoarse.

Tears blurred Mark’s vision. He squeezed the boy's hand gently, leaning down. "I'm your dad, Leo. You’re safe now. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."

The boy didn't pull away. Instead, his fingers tightened around Mark’s thumb, a deep, exhausted sigh escaping his chest as he drifted back to sleep.

Outside the ambulance, two state investigators approached the doors. Arthur Sterling stood near his vehicle, speaking quietly with the lead detective, his hands held behind his back. The arrogance that had defined the billionaire for decades was completely hollowed out; he looked like an old, broken man waiting for the gavel to fall.

Mark stepped out of the ambulance, pulling the black ledger and his smartphone from his coat. He walked up to the lead investigator.

"Detective," Mark said clearly. "I have the security footage of domestic abuse, the financial records documenting five years of extortion and illegal custodial concealment, and the evidence of Julian Vance's attempted homicide."

Arthur looked at Mark, his lips trembling slightly, but he said nothing. He simply offered his wrists to the trooper standing beside him.

"Take it all, Mark," Arthur murmured as the handcuffs clicked into place around his frail wrists. "Rebuild what I tore apart."

As the police cruiser took Arthur and Julian away into the night, Mark watched the taillights fade into the mist. The empire was collapsing, but for the first time in five years, Mark felt the crushing weight lift from his chest.

Yet, as the ambulance prepared to transport Leo to the regional hospital, Mark’s phone buzzed in his pocket. It was an automated security alert from his home security system, miles away.

ALERT: Motion detected in nursery. Interior camera offline.
