Chapter 10 - Thunder on the Water

Julian moved with the silence of a ghost, his black attire blending seamlessly into the rain-soaked industrial shadows. The storm covered the sound of his footsteps as he reached the base of the crane. The high-voltage junction box hummed with lethal power, rainwater sizzling against its overheated copper coils.

He unholstered his weapon, aimed at the central transformer relay, and pulled the trigger.

The bullet pierced the core. A brilliant emerald-white flash erupted with a deafening crackle, sending showers of molten sparks across the crane base. Instantly, the massive yellow floodlights went black. The pier plunged into pitch darkness, illuminated only by the rhythmic sweeping searchlights from the arriving yacht.

""Power failure! Sector four!"" a guard shouted through the dark. ""Check the perimeter!""

Julian didn't wait. Using the lingering afterimage in his eyes, he sprinted through the gloom. He closed the distance to the first guard, striking the man's temple with the butt of his pistol before the mercenary could raise his weapon. He caught the falling body silently and lowered it into the mud.

The second guard turned, the red dot of his rifle sweeping blindly. Julian grabbed the barrel, deflecting the shot into the dirt, and drove his knee into the man’s solar plexus, following through with a short, brutal right hook that dropped him cold.

Above, the sniper panicked, blindly spraying the ground near the shipping container with high-caliber rounds. Concrete chips exploded around Julian's feet.

Julian grabbed the fallen guard’s assault rifle, aimed upward at the catwalk silhouetted against the storm clouds, and fired three controlled bursts. The red laser snapped off, and a heavy thud echoed from the gantry above as the sniper collapsed onto the iron scaffolding.

""Elena!"" Julian roared over the wind.

He reached the heavy steel doors of the blue container. The electronic keypad was dead from the surge, but the heavy mechanical locking bar remained. Julian wrenched the iron bar upward with all his strength, muscles tearing against his shoulders. The rusted gears screeched and finally snapped open.

He hauled the thick steel door wide.

Inside, sitting bound to a wooden chair in the damp, hollow darkness of the container, was Elena.

Her dark hair was matted with blood, her face bruised and pale, but her eyes—brilliant, defiant, and fierce—widened as the dim moonlight caught Julian's face.

""Julian,"" she whispered, her voice breaking.

He dropped his weapon, threw his arms around her, and pulled her against his chest. Her body trembled against his, her tears hot against his cold, rain-soaked neck.

""I found them,"" Julian choked out, cutting the zip-ties binding her wrists with his pocketknife. ""Leo and Maya are safe. They brought me the letter.""

Elena gripped his face with both hands, her touch grounding him instantly. ""Julian, you shouldn't have come. It was a trap. Lucas knew you would figure out the power grid.""

Before Julian could answer, the piercing beam of a hundred-thousand-lumen spotlight slammed into the open container door, blinding them completely.

A cold, aristocratic voice echoed through a megaphone from the deck of the Cynthia II.

""Step out of the box, Julian. Or my men will execute your children where they hide.""
