THE ECHO OF A PROMISE BROKEN / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - The Iron Trap

""Rear exit is blocked,"" Marcus whispered, checking a small CRT monitor connected to the garage’s exterior security cameras. ""Two black SUVs at the front, three men flanking the fire escape. These aren't local enforcers. They're private contractors.""

Julian grabbed Leo by the shoulder and pulled him toward the heavy service pit in the center of the garage floor—a concrete trench used for undercarriage inspections. ""Get down there with Maya. Pull the steel grate over your heads and do not make a sound, no matter what you hear.""

""Dad—"" Leo began, his eyes wide.

""Trust me,"" Julian said, his voice unyielding. ""I promised you. I keep my promises.""

Leo hesitated, then nodded. He took Maya’s hand and lowered her gently into the darkness of the trench, slipping in after her and dragging the heavy diamond-plate cover shut until only a thin sliver of light remained.

The front glass shattered inward with a violent crash. Two smoke grenades bounced across the oil-stained concrete, hissing thick, blinding white phosphorus into the air.

Julian and Marcus dropped behind an armored truck chassis. The distinctive staccato burst of suppressed automatic fire chewed into the sheet metal above them, raining sparks and shattered fiberglass.

""Cover the left pillar!"" Julian yelled over the roar of gunfire. He leaned around the tire well, acquiring a silhouette moving through the smoke, and squeezed the trigger twice. The gray-clad figure collapsed with a dull thud.

Marcus returned fire with heavy, measured shots, pinning down two men near the entrance. ""They're trying to breach the office!"" Marcus shouted. ""They know about the vault!""

Suddenly, the heavy garage bay door rattled. A customized steel-reinforced ram attached to the lead SUV smashed through the corrugated metal, crumpling the door inward. The engine screamed as the vehicle pushed through the wreckage, headlights cutting through the smoke like laser beams.

From the passenger side stepped a tall man in a tailored charcoal overcoat. He carried no weapon in his hands, moving with an eerie, relaxed arrogance that chilled Julian to his core.

Even through the haze of smoke and the six years of presumed death, the face was unmistakable. The same aristocratic jawline, the same cold gray eyes, the same scar across the left brow from a polo accident in Oxford.

Lucas Vance had returned from the grave.

""Julian!"" Lucas called out, his voice smooth, resonant, carrying effortlessly over the fading smoke. ""Come out, little brother. Let’s not ruin another family reunion with unseemly violence. Mother is very disappointed in you.""

Julian stayed behind the chassis, his heart hammering against his ribs. He signaled to Marcus to hold his fire.

""You let Victoria stand at the altar alone,"" Lucas continued, taking slow, deliberate steps toward the center of the garage. ""Her father is threatening to pull three hundred million from our logistics merger. You've become entirely too sentimental, Julian. Just like our dear old father.""

""You killed him, didn't you?"" Julian's voice rang out from the shadows, steady and venomous. ""The heart attack wasn't natural.""

Lucas smiled, a pale, razor-sharp gesture. ""Father couldn't see the future. And neither could Elena. Come out, Julian. Give me the children, and Mother might let you keep your life.""

From beneath the floorboards, a tiny, terrified sob broke the silence.

Lucas's eyes dropped instantly toward the steel grate of the service pit.
