Chapter 2 - Shards and Shadows

The deafening explosion hurled colored glass across the high altar. Screams erupted from the high-society guests as pews rattled and powdered plaster fell like sudden, poisoned snow.
Julian’s instincts took over before thought could intervene. Ignoring Victoria’s piercing shriek, he lunged forward, wrapping his broad shoulders around the two children and slamming them to the marble floor beneath him. A heavy fragment of ruby glass struck his upper back, tearing through his tuxedo coat. He didn't feel the sting; he only felt the frantic, rabbit-like thumping of Leo’s heart beneath his chest and the muffled sob of the little girl.
""Julian! Let go of them!"" Victoria screamed from beneath an overturned oak pew, her veil ripped, diamonds tangled in her disheveled hair. ""The police are outside—Julian, what are you doing?!""
Smoke poured through the shattered lancet window. Through the haze, two figures clad in tactical gray emerged along the perimeter of the mezzanine choir loft. They didn't look like ordinary thugs; their movements were silent, military, deliberate. One of them raised a suppressed firearm, sweeping the sanctuary aisle.
""They're here,"" Leo gasped into Julian's ear, his voice tight with terrifying familiarity. ""The gray coats from the forest. Mom told me to run if I saw them.""
Julian pulled the boy and girl to their feet, shielding them behind his body. His heart raced with a sudden, horrifying realization: this was not a random assault. The letter spoke of a fire started by his own family. The wedding had provided the exact coordinates his enemies—or his kin—needed to corner the remnants of the woman he had loved.
""Down the sacristy hallway,"" Julian ordered, his voice dropping into the cold, authoritative tone he had suppressed for years. He grabbed Victoria's arm. ""Run toward the east courtyard, now!""
""Are you insane?! Who are these children to you?!"" she cried, refusing to move, her eyes wild with betrayal and fury.
The bullet struck the marble pillar beside Victoria's temple, sending stone chips spraying into the air. The reality shattered her vanity instantly. She turned and bolted toward the main exit with the screaming crowd.
Julian scooped the little girl, Maya, into his left arm while clamping his right hand around Leo’s wrist. ""Stay behind me. Don't look back.""
They sprinted through the private entrance behind the carved wooden reredos, slipping into the dark labyrinth of the vestry corridors. Footsteps echoed behind them, rapid and synchronized. Julian reached the service stairwell leading down to the church’s subterranean storage, his mind whirling.
Elena was dead. The thought felt like a physical hammer to his skull, but there was no time to mourn. He pushed the heavy iron door open, shoved the children into the dim cellar, and secured the latch.

""Leo,"" Julian breathed, kneeling in the darkness so his eyes met the boy's hazel gaze. ""Where did your mother die?""
Leo pulled a brass key on a string from around his neck. ""She didn't die of sickness, sir. They took her from the cabin before it burned. And she told me that the woman who ordered it... was your mother.""
