Chapter 11 - The Questions of Sons Spring brought curious minds. While building block towers in the living room, Julian looked up at Luca.

"Luca? Other kids at school have daddies who sleep in their houses. Are you our daddy?"
The room went completely still. Nia stood at the kitchen counter, holding a cutting knife, her breath suspended.
Luca knelt down until his eyes were level with Julian’s. He did not look to Nia for rescue; he owned the moment with absolute honesty.
"Yes, Julian. I am your father," Luca said gently. "A long time ago, before you were born, I made a terrible mistake and went away because I was confused and scared. Your mom was brave and gave you everything good in this world. But I came back because I love you and Leo more than my own life. And I will never, ever walk away again."

Leo dropped his wooden block and threw his arms around Luca’s neck. "Okay. Can you help me fix the roof of my castle now?"
Luca choked back a sob, burying his face in the child’s small shoulder. "Yes. Every single brick."
