Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary in Brooklyn Nia’s apartment in Cobble Hill was small, warm, and smelled of chamomile and water-based paints. She put the boys down for their afternoon nap, sitting beside their low wooden beds until their synchronized breathing filled the room.

Her hands finally began to shake.

For four years, she had built a fortress of dignity. She ran a boutique botanical design studio, paid her mortgage, and raised two joyful, empathetic sons who knew love without knowing bitterness. She had never poisoned their minds against their father; she had simply told them their father had an important journey far away.

When the front buzzer sounded at dusk, she did not look through the peephole. She opened the door. Luca stood in the narrow hallway, his tailored jacket draped over his arm, looking stripped of his corporate armor.

"Please don't call the police," he murmured. "Just give me ten minutes. Not as someone with claims—just as someone begging for context."
