Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past The fragile peace broke when Luca’s estranged mother, Eleanor, caught wind of the boys through Manhattan social channels. Unannounced, an Italian luxury town car pulled up outside Nia’s studio while she was loading flower arrangements into her van.

Eleanor stepped out in pristine cashmere, her eyes sharp and assessing. "You kept heirs to the family name in a walk-up apartment?"
Nia didn't flinch. She set a crate of eucalyptus down with calm deliberation. "I kept my children safe from a family that measures worth by stock portfolios and emotional cruelty. If you are here to offer checks or threaten custody, speak to an attorney. But you will not raise your voice near my door."

Luca arrived breathless five minutes later, having rushed from downtown. For the first time in his life, he stood between his aristocratic mother and Nia.
