Chapter 10 - The Fire Within

Clara looked at her father, who was leaning weakly against the wall. For eight years, she had felt powerless, trapped behind concrete walls and iron bars, labeled a criminal by a world that didn't care to look deeper. But standing in that dark cabin, watching her father’s frail form, something inside her transformed.
She was no longer the frightened sixteen-year-old girl in the smoke-filled hallway. She was a woman who had survived the darkest corners of the human soul and emerged unbreakable.
"Sheriff," Clara said, her voice sharp and decisive. "There’s an old underground root cellar behind the pantry. It connects to the old logging trail half a mile down the ridge. My father built it when I was a child."
Arthur looked at her in surprise. "You remember that?"
"I remember everything you taught me, Dad," Clara said, offering him a small, fierce smile. "Lawson, you and your deputies hold the front door. Show them you aren't backing down. I’m taking my father out through the trail, and we’re going straight to the state capital."

"I’m not alone," she replied, taking Arthur’s hand into hers. "I have the truth. And for the first time in eight years, the truth has a head start."
