Chapter 7 - The Unwinding Web

For the next two hours, inside that remote cabin while the storm raged outside, the dark truth of the Vance family was systematically unraveled.
Arthur explained that eight years ago, he had discovered massive financial fraud within the family corporation—fraud orchestrated by his brother Richard and supported by Eleanor. When Arthur threatened to go to the federal authorities, Richard had poisoned his evening drink, rendering him paralyzed.
They set the main house on fire to destroy financial records and fake Arthur’s death, intending to frame the blaze as an electrical accident. But when Clara unexpectedly came home early that night and tried to save her father, Eleanor saw an opportunity. They dragged Arthur out through the rear hidden access tunnel, left Clara unconscious in the smoke-filled hallway, and planted the evidence that condemned her.
"They kept me heavily medicated in a private facility in Canada for five years," Arthur wept, bowing his head into his hands. "They told me you died in the fire, Clara! They told me my little girl was gone! They said if I ever tried to escape or reveal myself, they would destroy your memory and smear your name as a suicidal arsonist!"
Clara stood frozen. The wall of anger she had built around her heart over eight years of imprisonment began to crumble, revealing a profound, aching sorrow. She hadn't been abandoned by a cruel father; they had both been victims of the same ruthless greed.

"Then... how did you get here?" Clara asked quietly.
"Two years ago, I stopped taking the sedatives," Arthur said, looking up at her with a flicker of his old strength. "I feigned compliance until I could escape the Canadian facility. I came back here secretly, hiding in this cabin, trying to gather proof of Richard's money laundering so I could bring him down. But three months ago, I found out the truth... I found out you weren't dead. You were at St. Jude's Correctional."
