Chapter 5 - The Cabin on Miller’s Ridge

At midnight, a storm broke over the valley, drenching the dense pine forests in torrential rain. Three police cruisers, accompanied by Sheriff Lawson and Clara—who had insisted on coming along to verify her father's identity—navigated the muddy, winding roads up toward Miller’s Ridge, a secluded mountainous area ten miles outside town.

The property was registered to a shell company owned by Richard Vance. It was a rustic, two-story cabin surrounded by high chain-link fencing and heavy security cameras—an unusually fortified home for an allegedly uninhabited piece of timberland.

Lawson stepped out into the pouring rain, his hand resting on his sidearm. "Stay in the car with Deputy Miller, Clara. Until we clear the structure."

Clara watched through the rain-streaked window as six armed officers approached the front porch. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Was her father in there? Was he a prisoner, or was he the mastermind behind the fraudulent empire that had sacrificed her youth?

A loud crash echoed through the storm as officers breached the front door. Seconds felt like hours. Then, through the dimly lit windows of the second floor, Clara saw a shadow move—a tall, bent figure standing near the glass, looking down at the police cars below.

Even through the rain and darkness, Clara recognized the posture. The slight slouch of the left shoulder, the way he held his right hand against his chest.

It was Arthur.
