Chapter 9 - Ambush at the Ridge

"Everyone get down!" Lawson shouted, pulling his firearm and pushing Clara behind the heavy oak dining table.
Headlights flooded through the cabin windows as three dark SUVs pulled up onto the muddy lawn. Men in tactical gear stepped out—not police, but private security operatives hired by the Vance Corporation's private asset protection firm.
Richard Vance wasn't going to let his empire collapse without a fight. With Arthur alive and Clara vindicated, Richard faced life in federal prison and absolute financial ruin. Desperation had made him dangerous.
"Lawson!" a voice boomed through a megaphone outside. It was Richard’s legal advisor, a cold-blooded attorney named Henderson. "You are on private property, executing an unauthorized search! Hand over the trespassers and step down, or we will file federal charges of police misconduct and breach of protocol!"

"They're bluffing," Lawson gritted his teeth, looking at his two deputies. "They want to stall until they can tamper with the evidence at the precinct."
"No," Clara said softly, looking out the window at the armed men. "They don't want to stall. They want to burn this cabin down, just like they burned the estate eight years ago. They want to finish what they started."
