Chapter 1 - The Ash on the TilesThe smell of scorched linoleum lingered heavy in the air, mixing with the sharp, acidic tang of terror.

Jack stood in the doorway of his own home, the heavy canvas of his tactical pack still biting into his shoulders, but his senses were locked onto a single point: Clara on the floor, her hands trembling over her swollen abdomen. At her side, the iron lay on its flank, the steam hissing like a dying serpent against the ceramic tiles. Crushed white lilies, petals bruised and grayed by shoe leather, were scattered across the threshold like funeral confetti.

His mother, Evelyn, had already bolted into the driveway, her voice shrill and thin as it carried across the suburban lawn, shouting fabrications into the morning breeze. But Jack didn't follow. In combat, you learned to secure the wounded before pursuing the threat.

He dropped to his knees, heedless of the tactical vest grinding into his chest. “Clara.” His voice, usually steady enough to direct artillery fire through a headset, cracked open. “Look at me. Look at my eyes.”

Clara drew a hitching breath, her fingers clutching his combat blouse. Her nails bit through the fabric, anchoring herself to reality. “You... they brought papers, Jack. A sergeant and a man in a black suit. They said your convoy took an IED outside Fallujah. They said there was nothing left to bring home.”

Jack gently cupped her bruised cheek, feeling the heat rising beneath her pale skin. His thumb swept away a hot tear that had cut a channel through the dust on her face. “I’m here. It was a blackout protocol. Our comms were severed for seventy-two hours, but we walked out. Every single one of us.” He looked at the paperwork sitting on the island counter—the jagged, uneven seals, the clumsy font mimicking official Department of Defense letterhead. A knot of cold rage coiled in his gut, but he forced it down into soldier’s discipline. “She forged it, Clara. She wanted you out of this house before I touched tarmac.”

The sirens began in the distance—a rising, mechanical howl cutting through the quiet suburban streets of Oak Ridge. Jack took Clara’s hand, guiding it to the pulse hammering beneath his jawline. “Feel that? That’s life. We are not broken. And neither is this child.”
