Chapter 11 - The True Meaning of ServiceA week later, Jack was summoned to the local reserve center for a debriefing with his commanding officer, Colonel Bennett.

Sitting in the crisp, air-conditioned office with flags flanking the desk, Jack placed his request for honorable separation on the mahogany wood. His contract was expiring in sixty days, and the military had offered him a promotion to Master Sergeant along with an instructor post at the training academy.

Colonel Bennett looked at the paperwork, then looked up at Jack, leaning back in his leather chair. “You have a spotless record, Vance. Bronze Star with Valor, three commendations, exemplary leadership. You could make Command Sergeant Major before you’re forty. Are you sure you want to hang it up?”

Jack stood at parade rest, his posture flawless, but his expression was relaxed, peaceful. “With respect, Colonel, I’ve spent ten years defending other people’s homes across the globe. But while I was overseas, my own home was left completely unguarded. I have a wife who nearly lost everything because I wasn't there to protect her from the snakes in our own grass. And I have a son arriving in three weeks.”

The Colonel studied Jack’s face for a long moment. He recognized that look—it was the look of a soldier who had completed his tour not just on paper, but in his heart.

“A man’s first duty is to his family, Sergeant,” Colonel Bennett said softly, reaching for his pen and signing the discharge authorization. “You’ve served this country with distinction. Go home and take care of your people.”

Jack saluted—crisp, sharp, and final. “Thank you, sir.”
