Chapter 15 - The Unbreakable CircleOne year later.

The Vance backyard was filled with laughter, the sizzle of burgers on the grill, and the warmth of a late summer afternoon.
Little Leo, now toddling on sturdy legs, was chasing a golden retriever puppy across the manicured green grass, his joyful squeals filling the air. Mrs. Gable sat at the patio table, happily sharing a slice of homemade apple pie with Marcus, who was recounting stories of his travels through the American West.
Clara came out of the kitchen carrying a tray of iced tea. She wore a light sundress, her face bright, tanned, and radiant with peace. There was no trace of the battered woman who had wept on the kitchen tiles twelve months ago.
Jack walked over from the grill, sliding his arm naturally around her waist. Together, they watched their son fall onto the soft grass, giggle, and pull himself back up, utterly fearless.
“We did it, Jack,” Clara said softly, resting her head against his shoulder.
“No,” Jack replied, kissing the top of her hair. “You did it. You held the line when everything looked hopeless. You believed in our future even when the world told you I was gone.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his father’s old compass, setting it on the table. The needle pointed true north—steady, unwavering, anchored to the Earth’s core.

A real family, Jack realized, was not defined by blood or inheritance. It was forged in the fire of shared trials, protected by integrity, and held together by the quiet, daily choice to put others before oneself.
The front door of their home stood open to the summer breeze, inviting in the sunlight, the laughter of friends, and the boundless promise of tomorrow. The war was over, the ghosts were laid to rest, and Sergeant Jack Vance was finally, truly, home.
