Standing before the court in handcuffs, Evelyn pleaded guilty to felony grand larceny, forgery of official government instruments, and reckless endangerment.
Judge Miller did not mince words during the sentencing: “Mrs. Vance, you displayed a callous disregard for human life and exploited the sacred honor of our military casualty notification system for personal greed and petty malice. You weaponized a nation’s grief against a vulnerable young mother. You will serve five years at the Lowell Correctional Institution, followed by three years of supervised probation. Furthermore, a permanent, lifetime restraining order is hereby enacted prohibiting you from any contact with Clara Vance and her descendants.”
Clara sat beside Jack in the front row of the gallery, her hand resting over her round belly. She didn't cheer, nor did she cry. There was no joy in seeing a family shattered, but there was profound, unshakeable relief.
