Chapter 14 - The Arrival of DawnFour days after the verdict, at 3:14 in the morning, Clara woke Jack with a quiet, urgent hand on his shoulder.

“Jack. It’s time.”

The drive to the hospital was calm. There was no panic, no frantic rush. The streets were empty, bathed in the silver glow of a harvest moon.

In the delivery room at St. Jude’s, with the sunrise painting the horizon in strokes of amber and rose, Leo Thomas Vance entered the world with a fierce, defiant cry that echoed off the white walls.

The nurse cleaned him quickly and placed the swaddled bundle directly onto Clara’s chest. Clara wept—soft, luminous tears of joy that washed away the last lingering shadows of the ordeal.

Jack stood beside them, leaning down so his face was inches from his son’s tiny, wrinkled features. The boy had Clara’s hazel eyes and Jack’s determined brow.

“Look at him, Jack,” Clara whispered, her voice weak but full of wonder. “He’s safe. Everything is quiet now.”

Jack touched the baby’s tiny, grasping fingers. “He will never know fear in his own home, Clara. I promise you that on my life. He will only ever know what love feels like.”

Marcus arrived two hours later, bringing an enormous bouquet of fresh, blooming white lilies—unblemished, tall, and fragrant—placing them on the windowsill where the morning sun caught their petals.

“Figured these flowers deserved a better memory in your family,” Marcus said with a wide, weathered grin.
