Chapter 10 - The Keys to the Kingdom

Elena grabbed the tactical flashlight from Frank’s utility belt and clicked it on, sweeping the narrow beam across the wrecked kitchen. Martha remained curled into a fetal position beneath the table, trembling uncontrollably as she stared at the lifeless eyes of her son David, whose face was frozen in a grotesque grimace of suffocation just a few feet away. The illusion of domestic power had completely crumbled; the house was nothing more than a slaughterhouse.
Elena walked over to the kitchen counter, where Frank’s encrypted tactical radio sat upright in its charging cradle. She reached out and snatched it, clipping it securely to the collar of her sweater. Then, she knelt beside the fallen deputy, her knee pressing hard into his injured shoulder. Frank groaned through clenched teeth, his head falling back against the steel surface of the refrigerator.
""The clearance code, Frank,"" Elena whispered, her voice dangerously soft. ""The code that shuts down the vehicle locator and overrides the county roadblocks. Give it to me, or I let the rest of the Thorne team walk through those patio doors to finish what they started.""
Frank’s eyes flickered with terror. He knew the brutality of the Thorne syndicate; they did not offer quick deaths to federal agents who double-crossed them. If they took him alive, they would spend days peeling away his skin before dumping him in an abandoned quarry. ""Seven... seven-four-niner-echo,"" he gasped, his jaw shuddering. ""It’s the emergency priority bypass. The cruiser's console will accept it.""
""Thank you, Frank,"" Elena said. She did not raise the weapon to execute him. Leaving him alive in this kitchen was a far more poetic retribution. She reached down, retrieved the auto-injector case from his belt, and slipped the remaining dose of atropine into her own pocket. Then, she turned toward the dining table.
Martha looked up with wild, tear-filled eyes. ""Elena... you can't leave me here with them! They'll kill me! I'm an old woman, Elena, have mercy!""

Elena stopped at the threshold of the foyer, looking back at the woman who had watched her husband abuse her for three years without offering a single word of comfort. ""You told me once that every woman earns the home she lives in, Martha,"" Elena said with chilling indifference. ""Enjoy yours.""
She stepped through the shattered front door into the brisk night air, sprinting toward the parked cruiser with the headlights slicing through the rising mist. As she wrenched the driver's door open, the radio on her collar crackled to life with a harsh, urgent voice: ""Unit four, this is command. We have an unregistered black SUV entering the long driveway. Identify immediately.""
