Chapter 12 - The Ghost Road

Elena pulled herself upright, coughing as the pungent dust from the deployed airbags settled across the dashboard. Her forehead ached where it had grazed the steering wheel, but the safety harness had held her securely in place. She checked the rearview mirror; behind her, the black SUV lay overturned in the ravine, its wheels spinning uselessly in the cold air while dark smoke poured from the mangled engine block.
The cruiser's front end was crushed and twisted, but the radiator had miraculously survived the impact, and the engine was still rumbling with a steady, deep cadence. Elena jammed the gear shifter back into drive, coaxing the battered machine forward. The vehicle limped out of the long driveway, turning onto the desolate county highway that stretched through the endless black forests of the northern border.
She switched off the roof bar and dimmed the headlights to parking markers, transforming the cruiser into a black silhouette skimming through the mist. The tactical radio on her collar hissed intermittently with increasingly frantic dispatches from the state police center, reporting an officer-involved shooting and demanding an all-points bulletin for Unit Four. They still believed Frank was behind the wheel, fleeing a disastrous operation.
Elena reached down to the cruiser's floorboard, grabbing the heavy tactical laptop mounted between the front seats. With the priority override engaged, the terminal displayed the full encrypted database of the marshal service. Her hands moved swiftly over the keys as the car coasted through the fog. She didn't search for safe houses or extraction routes; she searched for a name she hadn't spoken aloud in over six years: Arthur Thorne.
The screen flashed, populating a private estate file located just thirty miles north, nestled inside the gated hills of Lake Fall. The address was marked with an official status: IMMUNITY AGREEMENT PENDING.

Elena stared at the glowing green letters, her lips curling into that same terrible, cold smile that had terrified David in his final moments. Frank and Martha hadn't betrayed her for a bounty from the mob; they were trading her testimony to Arthur Thorne himself in exchange for immunity from their own federal corruption charges. She was the final loose end standing between the crime boss and a clean slate.
""You should have made sure I died in that kitchen,"" Elena whispered into the dark cab, turning the steering wheel sharply onto the mountain access road that led straight toward the lake.
