Chapter 11 - Ignition and Impact

Elena slammed the cruiser’s heavy door shut and locked the cab from the inside. The interior smelled of stale coffee, industrial floor cleaner, and gun oil. She rammed the ignition key into the column, twisting it hard. The cruiser’s powerful V8 engine roared to life with a violent shudder, the digital dashboard lighting up in a wash of tactical green and amber readouts.

Immediately, the vehicle's computer console flashed an urgent prompt: ENTER PROTOCOL OVERRIDE. Her fingers flew across the ruggedized keyboard, punching in the sequence Frank had surrendered: 7-4-9-E. The screen blinked green: COMMAND PRIORITY ACCEPTED. GPS TRACKING SUSPENDED.

Down the winding gravel driveway, twin high-beam headlights suddenly crested the hill, cutting through the dense autumn fog like two brilliant daggers. The black SUV was moving at breakneck speed, its tires throwing showers of loose stones against the dark pine trees. The Thorne syndicate's reinforcement team had arrived, and they were driving straight toward the house to box her in.

Elena did not look for a way around them. The driveway was narrow, flanked on both sides by deep drainage ditches and dense, unyielding oak trunks. There was no room for evasion. She slammed her foot down on the emergency brake, revved the V8 engine until the tachometer needle bounced off the redline, and threw the transmission into drive.

""Hold on,"" she muttered to the empty vehicle, releasing the brake with a violent snap.

The cruiser leaped forward, its rear tires smoking against the wet asphalt before catching traction and hurling the two-ton vehicle down the narrow lane. The high beams of the approaching SUV grew blindingly bright, illuminating Elena’s stone-cold expression behind the reinforced windshield. Inside the oncoming vehicle, the driver’s eyes widened in sheer panic as he realized the police cruiser had no intention of yielding.

At the final second before impact, Elena ducked her head below the dashboard. The collision was deafening—metal crumpling against reinforced steel with the sound of a freight train derailment. The cruiser’s bull-bar crushed the SUV’s radiator, the violent momentum spinning the heavier vehicle sideways and shoving it down the steep embankment into the ravine. Elena’s cruiser skidded sideways, tires screeching as the smell of burning rubber and hot coolant filled the air, coming to a shuddering halt fifty yards past the wreckage.
