Chapter 14 - The Final Ledger

Arthur chuckled, a dry, humorless sound that echoed across the empty terrace. He gestured with his whiskey glass toward the interior of the mansion. ""Come inside out of the cold. It seems our mutual friends Frank and Martha have failed to manage their domestic affairs with their usual... discretion.""
Elena walked into the opulent grand foyer, her dirty sneakers leaving muddy prints on the white Italian marble floor. The two bodyguards followed closely behind, their eyes locked on her every movement. Arthur led her into a vast, wood-paneled library dominated by a massive stone fireplace where thick oak logs burned fiercely, casting dancing orange shadows across walls lined with thousands of leather-bound books.
On the heavy mahogany desk in the center of the room lay a thick manila folder tied with black ribbon—the original documents of the financial embezzlement Elena had stolen from the Thorne enterprise six years ago, the evidence that had driven her into witness protection.
""You think this was about revenge, don't you?"" Arthur said, setting his glass on the desk and leaning against the edge. ""You believed I spent five years hunting you because of bruised pride. How terribly pedestrian. I needed you alive, Elena, until tonight. You are the only living person whose signature can unfreeze the offshore accounts in Grand Cayman. Without your biometric release, fifty million dollars remains permanently locked in federal purgatory.""
Elena stood before the fire, holding her cold hands out toward the flames. The warmth seeped into her stiff fingers, soothing the aching bruises beneath her sweater. ""And Frank was supposed to bring me here alive,"" she stated quietly.
""Frank was an expensive errand boy,"" Arthur said with a dismissive wave of his hand. ""He promised to deliver you docile, broken, and ready to sign whatever paper I placed before you. But seeing you stand here, covered in blood and completely unbothered, tells me Frank is likely dead on your kitchen floor.""
Elena turned around, meeting Arthur's cold, calculating gaze with an expression of pure, unadulterated venom. ""David is dead. Frank is bleeding out. Martha is waiting for whatever scavengers you send to clean the mess."" She reached into the pocket of her sweater and pulled out the digital thermometer she had carried from the kitchen, tossing it onto the mahogany desk between them.

The tiny blue diode was still blinking in steady intervals. Arthur frowned, stepping forward to examine the small device. ""What is this?""
""It’s not David's camera, Arthur,"" Elena said softly, stepping back toward the library door. ""It's a federal transponder. And I didn't override the cruiser’s tracking system. I rerouted it to broadcast Frank's emergency beacon directly to this estate's front yard.""
