Chapter 8 - The False Authority

The discovery struck Elena like cold water to the face. The contractors swarming the perimeter were not allied with Frank or the remnants of Martha’s handlers. The Thorne syndicate had not come merely to clean up an abandoned witness; they were systematically hunting the corrupt marshals who had sold out their secrets five years ago. Frank was walking into an execution, completely blind to the fact that he was the primary target.

Elena crouched low beside the ditch, the cold steel of the suppressed submachine gun resting firmly in her hands. The weight was familiar, an unsettling reminder of the lethal woman she had been before she traded her life for the pathetic illusion of safety under David’s iron fist. She had allowed herself to be beaten, degraded, and starved because she had believed the government's promise that submission equaled survival. That lie had finally rotted away.

From the kitchen, glass shattered violently. A sudden burst of gunfire erupted from the patio—three sharp, muffled thumps that blew through the French doors. Elena peered through the foliage. A second Thorne operator had already breached the kitchen threshold, his weapon smoking as he advanced on the dining table.

Martha’s high-pitched scream of terror was cut short by a heavy blow. Frank emerged from the basement stairwell, firing his Glock blindly across the counter. The kitchen erupted into chaos: bullets shredded the polished cabinetry, sending shards of porcelain and splintered cherry wood flying across the room. David’s corpse was kicked aside like trash as Frank scrambled behind the kitchen island for cover, blood leaking from a fresh graze along his temple.

""Check the perimeter!"" Frank screamed into his radio, his voice cracking with panicked desperation. ""We’ve got hostiles on site! They knew the safe house coordinates! I repeat, the Thorne cell is—""

A bullet punched through the drywall above his head, showering his hair with white plaster dust. Elena stood at the tree line, watching her two tormentors tearing each other apart. She could have turned and slipped into the endless dark woods, vanishing into the night before anyone realized she had survived. But running meant spending the rest of her life looking over her shoulder, waiting for the next Frank, the next David, or the next Thorne assassin to corner her in another kitchen.

She raised the submachine gun, aligning the red dot sight with the back of the Thorne shooter standing on the patio. ""Nobody walks away clean,"" she whispered, and squeezed the trigger.
