Chapter 11 - The Architect's Gambit

The mention of her daughters struck Nora with the force of an electric shock. Every ounce of fear evaporated, replaced by an icy, diamond-hard focus. An architect spends her life calculating loads, stresses, and structural failures; she knew how to find the exact point where a structure collapsed.

""The drive isn't in my pocket,"" Nora said evenly, keeping her chin high.

Marcus stepped forward, his rifle steady. ""Don't play games with me. We saw you take it from the study.""

""I copied it,"" Nora lied with absolute conviction, never letting her gaze waver from Chloe. ""The silver drive in my car is an encrypted decoy. The moment you plug it into any unauthorized network, it executes a self-deleting script and mirrors the full ledger directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the IRS criminal division, and the Attorney General.""

Chloe's confident smirk faltered for the briefest fraction of a second. She glanced at her brother. ""She’s bluffing.""

""Try it,"" Nora challenged, pointing toward her idling Mercedes. ""The drive is sitting on the passenger seat. Go ahead and plug it into your field terminal. See what happens to your employer’s forty million dollars.""

Marcus hesitated, lowering the muzzle of his rifle an inch. ""Chloe, check the car.""

Chloe stepped past Nora, her boots splashing through the puddle of Julian's blood. As she reached for the handle of the Mercedes, Nora moved.

She didn't reach for a weapon. Instead, she reached into her coat pocket, pulled out the heavy industrial remote control she had grabbed from the pier's maintenance gate, and slammed the emergency red toggle switch.

Above their heads, the massive hydraulic release valve of the overhead freight gantry—weighing three tons and suspended by pressurized cables—hissed violently. A torrent of industrial sea ballast water and unsecured iron cargo chains cascaded downward directly onto the pier's perimeter.
