Chapter 2 - Cold Reflections

The silence in Nora’s Mercedes was deafening on the drive back to the house in Oakridge. Evelyn sat rigid in the passenger seat, venting sharp bursts of indignation, swearing to strip Julian of every dime he had ever touched. Nora gripped the steering wheel, watching the rhythmic sweep of the windshield wipers clearing away an afternoon drizzle. She felt completely untethered from her body.
Her mind refused to replay Julian's excuses. Instead, it obsessively zoomed in on the red silk dress. Nora remembered running her hands over the fabric at the boutique, thinking how radiant Chloe would look for her upcoming anniversary with her fiancé. The irony was a jagged blade twisting in her gut. Julian hadn't just betrayed her with a stranger; he had orchestrated a theater of humiliation inside the very life Nora had built.
When they pulled into the driveway of the stone-faced suburban home, Nora paused before cutting the engine. In the upstairs window, she caught sight of Mrs. Higgins, the nanny, holding five-year-old Lily by the hand, pointing out the window at Mommy’s car.
Nora wiped her cheeks with the back of her sleeve, took a deep, shuddering breath, and adjusted the rearview mirror. Her eyes were rimmed in red, but her posture straightened.
""Evelyn,"" Nora said quietly. ""Not in front of the girls. Not a word.""
""He will not step foot in this house again, Nora,"" Evelyn demanded, her chin trembling with fury.
""He won't,"" Nora replied flatly.
Stepping through the front door, Nora was immediately enveloped by the scent of warm vanilla and the innocent laughter of Lily and Maya. The twins ran toward her, small arms wrapping around her knees. Kneeling down, Nora buried her face into their soft hair, kissing their foreheads while silently vowing that their foundation would not crumble, no matter how violently Julian tried to shake it.
That evening, once the girls were tucked into bed and Evelyn had finally retired to the guest suite after half a bottle of Pinot Noir, Nora took the silver USB drive to Julian’s locked study. She booted up his personal laptop and inserted the drive.

She expected romantic messages, secret rendezvous bookings, or offshore financial accounts. Instead, a series of encrypted corporate spreadsheets appeared on screen, detailing unauthorized municipal transfers from the city's historic district restoration fund.
Right at the bottom of the ledger, authorized by the project lead, was Julian’s digital signature—alongside an unfamiliar signature that made Nora’s heart stop: her own mother’s maiden name.
