Chapter 15 - The Clean Slate

Within minutes, federal tactical vehicles and legitimate law enforcement swarmed the docks, pinning Evelyn's private security team with blinding searchlights and heavy artillery. Evelyn did not run. She stood frozen on the concrete, the silver revolver slipping from her limp fingers and clattering onto the asphalt. As federal agents handcuffed her, she glared at Nora with a silence more venomous than any scream.
Paramedics hauled Julian up from the drainage culvert on a backboard, oxygen mask strapped over his face, his pulse faint but stable. As they wheeled him toward the ambulance, his eyes fluttered open, meeting Nora's for one last, fleeting second. Nora did not move toward him. She simply watched him go, knowing that prison walls and courtrooms would claim whatever life he had left.
Chloe was loaded into a separate police cruiser under heavy guard, her red slip dress torn, stained with mud and blood, stripped of every ounce of vanity.
Dawn broke over the harbor, painting the gray storm clouds with pale slivers of rose and gold.
Nora walked away from the flashing red and blue lights, handing the silver USB drive directly to the lead federal prosecutor on site. She signed the initial depositions without trembling, her mind clear and weightless.
An hour later, Nora pulled her car into the driveway of the Oakridge house. The rain had completely stopped. Birds were beginning to sing in the high branches of the oak trees.
She walked through the front door, slipping off her bloodstained heels in the entryway. The house was quiet.
Upstairs, the soft sound of small feet padded across the wooden floor. Lily and Maya appeared at the top of the staircase in their matching pajamas, rubbing the sleep from their eyes.
""Mommy?"" Lily called out softly. ""Is Daddy home?""

Nora walked up the stairs, knelt down on the landing, and wrapped both of her daughters into a fierce, unbreakable embrace. She kissed their cheeks, breathing in the innocent scent of clean laundry and childhood.
""No, my loves,"" Nora said, her voice steady, gentle, and utterly free for the first time in her life. ""Daddy isn't coming back. But from now on, it's just us. And we are going to build something entirely new."""
