Chapter 12 - A New Foundation

By early spring, the snow melted away, revealing bright purple crocuses and golden daffodils pushing through the rich black soil of the gardens.
Marcus Miller had pleaded guilty to charges of extortion and battery, accepting an eight-year sentence in federal prison with no possibility of parole for five years. Jonathan Sterling's empire was being dismantled piece by piece by federal regulators, with his assets auctioned to repay hundreds of defrauded workers and suppliers.
Clara received her acceptance letter from the Pratt Institute.
That evening, Christian hosted an intimate dinner in the formal dining room to celebrate. Dr. Helena Ward attended, alongside Dominic and Leo. The room, which for a decade had only seen silent dinners between Christian and corporate portfolios, echoed with laughter and warm conversation.
After dinner, Leo ran outside to play catch with Dominic on the lawn under the twilight sky. Dr. Ward bade her farewell, leaving Christian and Clara alone on the stone terrace overlooking the Hudson.
Clara held a glass of sparkling water, looking out at the shimmering river. "I received an offer for a small apartment near the campus in Brooklyn today."
Christian's hand paused on the stone balustrade. A quiet ache flashed across his face, though he kept his tone supportive. "That would cut down on your commute. It’s a good step."
Clara turned to him, the cool evening breeze catching loose strands of her dark hair. "I turned it down."
Christian looked at her, surprised. "Why?"
"Because Brooklyn was where I was a victim," she said, taking a step toward him. "And this house... this house is where I learned to be myself. But more than that, Christian... I don't want to leave you."
Christian felt his breath hitch in his throat. For months, he had maintained a strict boundary of professional respect and chivalry, terrified of taking advantage of her vulnerability. "Clara... you’ve been through hell. You need time to find out who you are without obligations, without debts, without—"

"I know who I am," she interrupted softly, reaching out to rest her hand against his cheek. Her skin was warm, her touch entirely devoid of hesitation. "I am a woman who loves an honorable man who gave everything to save a family that had nothing to give him in return."
Christian closed his eyes, leaning his cheek into her palm, feeling a profound peace settle over his soul.
