Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Accountability

Over the next four days, the east wing of the Vance mansion transformed. The grim silence that had defined the house since Christian's father died was slowly dismantled. Leo discovered the sprawling library, spending hours tracing illustrations in encyclopedias, while Clara rested under the watchful eye of Dr. Ward.

Yet Clara remained restless. By the fifth morning, she appeared in Christian’s ground-floor study, wearing a modest knitted sweater and dark trousers he had arranged for her.

"You shouldn't be standing," Christian said without looking up from his dual monitors. "Dr. Ward said your third rib needs another week of minimal movement."

"I can't just sit here like a guest, Mr. Vance," Clara said, her voice steadying. "I’m an employee. I clean floors. If I am not working, I am taking charity, and charity always comes with a debt. Tell me what Marcus did to you or what you plan to do, so I know what bill I’m running up."

Christian pushed his keyboard aside, folded his hands on the mahogany desk, and looked up. "Sit down, Clara."

She hesitated, then pulled back the heavy leather chair opposite him and sat, keeping her posture rigid despite the discomfort.

"When I was twelve," Christian began, his tone unhurried, "my father was an honest harbor freight operator. A rival syndicate wanted his pier. They didn't come with contracts; they came with iron pipes. My mother took the brunt of it while hiding me under the floorboards of our office. She survived, but she spent the rest of her life in constant pain, unable to walk without braces."

Clara watched him, her breath catching. "Your father... did he fight back?"

"He learned the rules of the jungle. He built an empire so large that no predator could ever enter our garden again. But in doing so, he forgot why he built the wall in the first place. He became cold, cynical, untouchable." Christian leaned forward. "When I walked into that bathroom and saw you bleeding on my floor, I didn't see an employee. I saw my mother. And I realized that having all the power in the world is a moral failure if you use it only to insulate yourself."

Tears shimmered in Clara's eyes, but she didn't look down. "Marcus thinks he's untouchable because he works for Jonathan Sterling."

"Jonathan Sterling thinks money is armor," Christian countered smoothly. "I intend to show him it is merely paper."
